That's the right order. The cause is delight and the effect is rescue. Some put it backwards, believing God delights only after the rescue. God's delight is on the front end. too.
Why the delight? David was God's creation, God's chosen. He also had God's heart. The person God chooses He uses, blesses and delights in. When you're His chosen, His delight doesn't fluctuate based upon your behavior. His delight in you is tied to your identity in Christ. (You did not hear me say behavior is 100% irrelevant. No, you can't sin at will and expect God to be nonchalant or aloof.
There is a catalyst: "The Lord was my stay." Those who stay with the Lord should expect He will stay with them. Somehow this staying is tied to cause and effect (delight and rescue). God is delighted when your heart and mind are fixed on Him. How can He remain ambivalent to such faithfulness?
