- Lack of the knowledge of God led to rejection (Hos. 4:4-6). Verse 6 sounds similar to the end of 1 Sam. 15:23.
- Stubbornness resulted from continued misdirection of desire (Hos. 4:7-10). Priests and leaders (Hos. 4:10) were stubborn and so were the people (Hos. 4:16).
- Lack of understanding (Hos. 4:11-14). What the people pursued (Hos. 4:11) dulled their senses and conscience.
- Addiction to shame (Hos. 4:15-19). They felt the shame but wouldn't depart from it.
