Insights on Fishing (Jn. 21:1-14)

Today we conclude reading the Gospel of John. Today's reading is John 21:1-25.

If Jesus is not present, you won't catch anything.  Zeal, enthusiasm, planning and human effort are no substitutes for the presence of Jesus.

Keep on fishing.  Every fisherman wants to catch something (other than sunburn or a cold).  When it comes to evangelism, fishing starts with intentionality.  No one is hauled accidentally into the Kingdom.  If no one is fishing, no one will be caught.

Jesus knows where the fish are.  He doesn't want your evangelistic efforts to be frustrated.  Before you go fishing next time, listen for Jesus' instructions.

There are a large number of fish to be caught.  At Jesus' instruction, the men's combined catch went from zero (total ineffectiveness) to one hundred fifty-three (great success).  I find it interesting there were exactly 153 fish.  Every fish matters to Jesus!  All Scripture is inspired (2 Tim. 3:16).  Since the Holy Spirit, wanted us to know there were exactly 153 fish caught, then counting is not a fleshly activity.  Counting is an act of accountability.

You'll never catch all the fish by yourself.  You need the other fishermen (other Christians and churches).  You need a large net (event or opportunity).  You need the boat (anointing).  The boat did what the combined efforts of 7 grown men could not.
Jesus watches when you fish (Jn. 21:4).  He's not watching to scold you or intimidate you.  The thought of a catch thrills Him far more than it ever will you.  When you fish, you bring Him pleasure.

After a catch of fish, plan a time of celebration and refreshing (Jn. 21:12).  Jesus arranged breakfast for the seven.  Let Jesus give back to you after you've put out.  You'll find Him ready and willing to refresh you.
