Muttering (Jn. 7:32)

We're continuing to read through the Gospel of John. Today's reading is John 7:1-36.

"Muttering" (CSB, ESV, NASB) is also translated as "arguing" (CEV), "whispering" (NCV, New Berkeley, Phillips, Jewish N.T., NIV), "murmuring" (KJV, NLT), "expressing their various doubts" (Weymouth).

The word is used in 12 verses in the New Testament (Mt. 20:11; Lu. 5:30; Jn. 6:41, 43, 61; 7:12, 32; Ac. 6:1; 1 Cor. 10:10; Phil. 2:14; 1 Pet. 4:9; Jude 16).

The Greek word (gog-goo-dzō) means to mutter, grumble or complain. In the Septuagint (translation of the Old Testament into Greek), gog-goo-dzō is used to describe the Israelites' grumbling in the wilderness.
