If you want wisdom, seek it before you need to draw from it.  Some things in life pre-announce themselves.  Don't wait until you must make a big decision to seek God's input on matters. Seek wisdom early, once you first become aware of the challenge or opportunity.

For example, when you first see evidence of a leak in your roof, that is the time to start getting contractors to submit bids.  Don't wait until you have a gaping hole in the living room ceiling.
