Read John 3:36.
The opposite of eternal life, at least in this verse, is not eternal death (although that is true) but the abiding of God's wrath upon a person. Therefore, to have eternal life means exemption from the wrath of God. Read Romans 5:9-10.
What if we stopped asking people if they are going to heaven and started asking them if they are exempt from God's wrath?
