Zollie L. Smith is Director of Home Missions for the General Council of the Assemblies of God (Springfield, MO). In a letter I received November 16, 2013, he summarized Christmas. The last line is full of hope.When you think about it, the story of Christmas is quite remarkable. A virgin teenage girl becomes pregnant, yet her fiancé chooses to embrace the scandal and marry her anyway. The Creator of the universe sends His Son to earth, not in all His glory and majesty, but as a tiny, dependent baby. The Prince of heaven is born in a smelly barn, and His birth is announced not to sovereign officials, nor even to the religious elite, but to lowly shepherds. And yet, prophets and angels alike declared that this Baby would change the world. It's apparent by the Christmas story that God often uses unconventional means to accomplish His divine will.
