Good Advice for Preachers

Again I mention Seth Godin.  In yesterday's post, he distinguished between persuading and convincing.
  • Persuasion appeals to the emotions and to fear and to the imagination. Convincing requires a spreadsheet or some other rational device.
  • It's much easier to persuade someone if they're already convinced, if they already know the facts. But it's impossible to change someone's mind merely by convincing them of your point.
You can access the article at http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/11/persuade-vs-convince.html.

It is the Holy Spirit's role to convince (Jn. 16:8-11).  It is the preacher's role to persuade (Ac. 18:4; 26:8; 28:23; 2 Cor. 5:11).
