We're continuing to read through the Gospel of John. Today's reading is John 12:1-19.
A "posse" is a loosely connected group of people coming together over a common cause (example: a posse that hunts down a murderer). Today a "posse" is an identity group, slang for one's set of friends. There were several posse in the Palm Sunday account.
The involved posse (Jn. 12:12-15). Quick to express their celebration. The palm branches were symbolic of joy and triumph (Lev. 23:40; Rev. 7:9). The donkey was a symbol of rank and importance (Judg. 5:10; 10:4).
The ignorant posse (Jn. 12:16). They didn't understand, at least not right away. They would come to understand when the Holy Spirit was given. There are still those today who don't understand what all the big fuss is about.
The intrigued posse (Jn. 12:17-18). They witnessed a miracle and couldn't keep quiet. All they talked about was the raising of Lazarus from the dead. We still have miracle chasers today. They'll hang out with Jesus so long as He does great things for them and gives them something to talk about.
The irritated posse (Jn. 12:19). Their only interest was to snuff out Jesus. They were angry He got so much attention.
Notice the Palm Sunday evangelistic mission: that the whole world might go after Him (Jn. 12:19). That's it! We should want what the Pharisees didn't. We should want the whole world to know Him, worship Him and serve Him.
