The Harvest (Mt 9:35-38)

Today's reading is Matthew 8-9.

Some preliminary facts:
  • The harvest belongs to the Lord.
  • None of the harvest should remain ungathered.
  • Jesus doesn't do all the harvesting by Himself.
  1. The harvest is more broadly defined than you think. The harvest includes those who need to hear His message, those who need to feel His compassion, those who need to experience lasting change. The harvest also includes the weary, the worn out, and the wayward.
  2. The workers are more sparsely distributed than you realize. No field of service -- local, national or international -- would ever say, "Please, no more workers!" If you are not actively increasing the harvest, then you are passively jeopardizing it.
  3. The solution is more blatantly obvious than you know. What's the solution? Prayer and participation. Only through prayer can you view the harvest as God does. Only through prayer will workers be sent and equipped. There will always be those called and sent elsewhere, outside their comfort zone. If that is not you, then you are called to work (go, give, pray) right where you are. (Could it be that one reason there is such lack of fervent prayer for evangelism and workers is because people are afraid God might call them to leave home?)
