Dragnet (Mt 13:47-50)

Today's reading is Matthew 13, 18.

The word picture is about fishing, but the principles are about Christ's Kingdom.
  1. You must cast the net. If not you, who? If not you, why not?
  2. You never know what the net will gather. It will gather "good" fish (sincere and repentant people). It will gather "bad" fish (religious-game-playing-look-alikes). It will gather non-fish (perhaps an old boot or piece of junk). No one is sure how it got in there, but it did. When we fish for men there can be some unusual experiences, troubling encounters or laughable moments. In evangelism, you always need to be prepared. "Old boots" will try to tell you, "Hey, we're just a different kind of fish."
  3. It is not up to you to determine who is a "good" fish, "bad" fish or non-fish. Your job is to cast the net and retrieve it. It is Jesus' job to identify and preserve the true fish. It is Jesus' job to judge the "bad" fish.
  4. Keep fishing. Keep casting the net and retrieving it. Jesus wants a full catch. More fish need to be gathered. Separation day is soon upon us.
