Broken Chimney Flue

The chimney flue is broken. I can't get it to shut again. It's probably not that big a deal to fix, except I'm not keen on sticking my mug into a rectangular hole that's bound to shower me with black soot. Anyway, I need to do something. The flue lets the smoke vent properly, but it's also the culprit that lets the cold air descend. When the flue remains open without a fire in the fireplace, that gets expensive. It's poor stewardship to forget about it or suggest it's no big deal.

That reminds me of my heart. That's where the smoke vents properly. It's also the culprit that lets discouragement, negativity, cynicism, and fear descend into my being. When the flue remains open and unguarded without a fire lit in my spirit, that gets expensive. It costs me time, effort, energy, drive, productivity, and faith. I no longer want to take risks or give everything my best. Relationships suffer.

No wonder Solomon encouraged us to watch over our hearts (Prov 4:23).
